1952 Jaguar Aerodynamic C-Type

Usually, car manufacturers saw racing competitions as a means to show the public the-mettle of their product. To join and win the likes of the Grand Prix and Le Mans are highly desired,-since this would really enhance their reputation. This is why the likes of Alpine or Aston Martin-worked hard to produce racing cars; to boost their name in the public and, consequently, the market.-However, this wasn’t the case for Jaguar.

During the early 1950s, Jaguar was already known as a powerhouse in the field of-automobile manufacturing. It doesn’t really need a Le Mans win or a Grand Prix championship;-it already had a great product line, with more to come. Surely, a defeat in the racing track would-mean disaster for the company. 

Still, if Jaguar didn’t take the chance, the world wouldn’t know the-likes of the 1952 Jaguar Aerodynamic C-type, one of the best racing cars Jaguar car has ever created and one of the most influential in the-industry.

In truth, however, the C-type is simply a rehashed model of the much acclaimed Jaguar XK 120. C meant competition, which-means it is the Jaguar XK 120 model meant for racing competitions. In 1950, Jaguar entered two XK-120 cars into the Le Mans, one of the (if not the) toughest competitions back then. It was only a-test for the car that wasn’t even meant to be a race car. However, the results of the-“test” proved to be very encouraging—so much so that Jaguar decided to create an-XK 120 car made for the race tracks. Not only was the XK 120 fast; it was durable enough for the-punishing requirements of the race track. 

Hence, the Jaguar C-Type was born. 

The 1952 Jaguar Aerodynamic C-type was simply an adjustment to the Jaguar C-Type produced a year after the XK 120’s race at Le Mans. In 1951, the C-Type won the race, proving that it had more than just potential for a competition car. A year after,-the 1952 Jaguar Aerodynamic C-type was made due to the company’s fear of the Mercedes Benz 300 SL, also a powerful car (it-later became iconic too, thanks to its amazing features). The 1952 Jaguar Aerodynamic C-type, obviously, had a more aerodynamic body, making it faster than the original C-Type—but rearrangements made the 1952 Jaguar Aerodynamic C-type vulnerable to car trouble. The year after that, the C-Type won again, thanks to its thinner and lighter body. The C-Type marked the start of Jaguar racing legacy.

In the end, the C-Type was succeeded by the D-Type, although it wasn’t as lucky as its predecessor in the tracks. The C-Type, especially the reworked 1952 Jaguar Aerodynamic C-type, is still the more iconic and legendary of the two. Today, a C-Type would cost millions. Of course, this is only natural—the C-Type did help Jaguar gain a reputation in the racing tracks, at a time when it was already contented-with its commercial supremacy.
