1959 Jaguar XK150 Roadster

Today, Jaguar is known as one of the best sports car manufacturers. However, during-its start up years, Jaguar actually struggled to get the attention of the public. In fact, one of-their very first released, the SS Jaguar line, failed to captivate the market. But this wasn’t-because their product was inferior; sadly, many insiders believe that the reason why the SS line-failed was because of its unfortunate name—the term SS reminds the people too much of the-Nazis and the Second World War.

Thankfully, the manufacturer did not stop and settle into failure. After the-commercial failure that was the SS Jaguar line, they began their quest for commercial dominance anew-with their XK series. And the XK series indeed proved to the world that Jaguar was a brand worth-trusting. 

The 1959 Jaguar XK 150 Roadster was a model built between the years 1957 and 1961, a-replacement for the Jaguar XK 140. But of course, before the influential 1959 Jaguar XK 150 Roadster-was built, Jaguar had to start somewhere—and this beginning was in the form of the XK-120. 

The Jaguar XK 120 was first presented in 1948 during the London Motor Show. Because-of this car, Jaguar easily became the star of the car show, for many reasons. Their second attempt-at automobile dominance was the sexiest sports car at that time. It was slick and very modern, with-a very unique bodywork for its time. Of course, the twincam six of the first XK model also proved to-be a hit among the British at that time. Car historians say that there was no other car like the XK-120 at that time—and they are right. Until now, the classic XK line proves to be among the-most influential model ever produced—so much so that many other manufacturers tried to-replicate this model.

In any case, the Jaguar XK 150 was the last in the XK line. Looking at it alongside-the earlier XKs, the differences are very obvious, both in its physical appearance and its powerful.-For instance, the 1959 Jaguar XK 150 Roadster was considered as matronly. Many say that this-particular model was some sort of test run of Jaguar, so they can gauge the people’s reaction-towards a bigger and taller Jaguar. The 1959 Jaguar XK 150 Roadster was less slick, but its 235-horsepower, 3.8 liter engine gave it power that the other Jaguar XK models did not have. It was also-among the most fuel efficient. 

Needless to say, just like the other XKs, the 1959 Jaguar XK 150 Roadster did change-the sports car industry. Very few manufacturers have created a more influential brand (the 911 of-Porsche and earlier Ferraris may be included in this exception). 

In any case, the XK 150 was replaced by the Jaguar E-type before the mid-1960s. Still, in the end, although the XK did not last long during its time, its contribution to the-industry cannot be paralleled.
