The Success of the 1951 Ferrari 212 Export Spider

One of the most impressive sports cars of its time, the 212 Export Spider Fontana was built for racing from the ground up. It managed a number of successful victories in 1951, and it was one of the first great cars in the racing tradition of Ferrari.

The Ferrari Export 212 was a car that came in an extremely limited supply. -There were only 28 of them made, and they were specifically designed for racing. It is one of-the few cars in the realm of sports cars that was only made for one year. The fact that so few-were made and for such a short period of time is not because they were not successful; the car was-preceded by the Ferrari 195 and it was followed by the 225 and the 250 S. It's just one of a-long line of sports cars from Ferrari that carried on a winning tradition.

It was a true sports car in that it had a front engine and rear wheel drive-layout. The engine was a 2.5 litre V12 that had its power delivered through a five speed-manual transmission. While there was just one engine option, there were a number of carburetor-configurations available that would increase the horsepower from a base of 150 right on up to 175-with the triple Weber carburetors. The engine was one that was originally a Colombo design-that had been improved and bored out over the years since 1946. It had been longitudinally-mounted and it was light in weight due to its aluminum alloy construction. The overall weight-of the car was kept to less than 1800 pounds thanks to this and the aluminum body.

The car rode on a tubular frame chassis. This was a standard version from-Ferrari with a few tweaks to give this car its racing prowess. One addition was to increase-the size of the fuel tank for longer races. The car had a double wishbone suspension on the-front and the rear wheels utilized a live axle with transverse leaf springs.

The Fontana part of the name refers to the body of the car. It was the design-of Carrozzeria Fontana, who had been commissioned by Ferrari to create a racing body for the Export-212. The result was an excellent race car that was available to individual buyers. The-racing heritage of the Ferrari Export 212 has been well documented. In 1951 in the Tour de-France Auto Racing Event, these cars filled the top three positions giving them an impressive and-decisive win that year. Further success will come at the Giro de Toscana and the Giro de-Sicilia races later that year.

Given its success over the years, it is hard to imagine that Ferrari was a-struggling company in the early 1950s. It was, and there were a number of car designs that-catapulted them into the position that they now enjoy. The Export 212 was definitely one of-these models, and the success that it had racing certainly helped to build up the name of-Ferrari.
