Looking Back At the 1960 Porsche 718 Formel 2 Racing Success

The 1960 Porsche 718 Formel 2 was known as a superior racing car of its time, and among other feats it was able to claim first, second and third place victories in the same race at least twice in its storied history. It has factored into the dreams of many children who one day dream of sitting behind the wheel of a world class race car.

This was not a car that was made for the public consumption. It was one that-was designed specifically for racing and it was built on the platform of the Porsche 718. -While the two shared many similarities in terms of their mechanical makeup, they were significantly-different to the eye. The Porsche 718 was a closed wheel car that was available to the-public. The 1960 Porsche 718 Formel 2 was an open wheel car that was designed specifically for-formula to racing.

The-Porsche 718 actually had a lot of success in racing. It used many innovative design features-like an aluminum body that help to reduce weight. It was a mid-engine configuration that allowed perfect weight distribution for racing. It was one of the-first cars that had an engine that was designed specifically by Porsche for use in their cars. -The engine was a naturally aspirated four cylinder version that produced 160 horsepower. This-was fairly substantial for the vehicle's weight, which was only a little over 1200 pounds.

The-changes to the design for the1960 Porsche 718 Formel 2 are obvious in terms of the exposed wheels,-but the car was also made longer in order to accommodate a larger fuel tank. It was a one-seater, with the steering wheel placed dead center of the car, so it is not one that you would see-on a normal road.

This-formula 2 car was so successful that it was actually used in formula 1 races and also showed success-there. The car is certainly distinctive looking, and many would liken it more to a bullet than-an automobile. It shows large vents in the back of the car which were necessary to dissipate-the heat from the engine. A single tailpipe that runs out the back is also a unique feature-that was not seen on many cars made then or now.

The 1960-Porsche 718 Formel 2 is not a car that many people have had the opportunity to drive, but it has-nonetheless become an icon of the automotive world and many people would be ecstatic to be able to-get their hands on one. It's not something that you could likely drive often or on anything-but an enclosed circuit, but it was such a beautiful design that people all over the world have come-to acknowledge its significance in terms of racing and automotive design. While it might not-look so much like other Porsche cars that people are familiar with, it has had much to do with the-design of future Porsche automobiles and race cars alike.
