Most of the winners of this race were Italian manufacturers, and names like Ferrari-and Alfa Romeo often found themselves in the winner's circle.  The only ones to challenge their-domination were the Germans who won in BMWs and Mercedes Benz automobiles, although they took just-three of the wins together over all of the races.

One of the worthy things of note about this race is that it showed the change in-automobile technology over the years that it was run.  The first race took over 20 hours to-complete and the last one was finished in just over 10 hours.

The race is still being run to this day although the format has changed.  In-1982 the race was resurrected with a twist; drivers now take part in cars that come from the thirty-year era of the original version of the race.  For those lucky enough to see the race in-person, it is a perfect way to see some of the most beautiful vintage racing cars of all time. -Even better, the spectators get to see them in action instead of on display.
